Covid infection levels in England continue to fall, although the overall risk rating remains Moderately High. The level recorded for the week ending 26 January is probably the lowest level seen since 2021, with around 1 in every 362 people infected. Influenza infections also continue to fall, although they are not yet back to baseline levels.

A lengthy period of relatively low Covid levels has never happened before in England since 2021. We are as confident as we can be that this is a real situation, not due to data error or a reduced number of tests. In this new situation, BuDS continues to encourage everyone to take the level of Covid precautions that feels right for them, bearing in mind their own personal circumstances. Our role is to give you the information to help you make informed decisions, and we will do so in this post.

Covid infection levels in England have fallen this week to amongst the lowest levels recorded in the last 2 years. However, please don’t be lulled into a false sense of security: the risk of meeting a Covid-infected person in England has not entirely gone away. 1 in every 330 people were still infected as of 19 January. Influenza infections are now steeply declining from their peak, but absolute levels still remain high.

After a small rise last week, Covid infection levels in England have remained static this week. The risk of meeting a Covid-infected person in England remains Moderately High, with 1 in every 253 people infected as of 12 January. Thankfully, influenza infections are now past the peak of last week, but still remain very high.

The long period of static Covid infection levels in England has ended, with a 70% increase in the last week. Influenza infections remain extremely high, but may have reached their peak.

The risk of meeting a Covid-infected person in England at New Year remains Moderately High. 1 in every 296 people were infected as of 29 December, a slight decrease over the last week. However, influenza cases are still rising, although less quickly than last week. If you don’t want to be ill for New Year, now is the time to be taking precautions.

Covid infection levels in England continue to remain roughly flat, and the risk of meeting an infected person in your everyday life remains Moderately High. There has been no significant change in Covid risk for five weeks now. 1 in every 259 people were infected as of 22 December. However, influenza cases continue to rise rapidly.

Although BuDS generally will be taking a break from 20 December 2024 to 5 January 2025, we will continue to publish our weekly Covid risk assessments over the holiday period.

Assuming that the official data that we use for our risk assessments is published on time, we expect to publish a Covid risk assessment on or near the following dates:

• 30 December 2024
• 6 January 2025

Influenza and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) cases continue to rise rapidly – the 6^th week of their increase.

However, cases of influenza and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) are rising rapidly, and have been for the last 5 weeks.
