The number of Covid-19 infected people in Bucks continues to increase quickly, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) released today (1 July 2022). Infection levels started to increase 3 weeks ago, and are still increasing very rapidly. The third wave of Covid-19 this year is growing far faster than predicted, and looks at this stage as if it could be as bad as or worse than the previous two waves.
It is important to remember that Covid-19 is NOT mild – it is not the flu, or a cold. While most vaccinated people will not need to go into hospital, Covid-19 can still make vaccinated people very ill at home. Also, of course, if you catch Covid-19, you run a risk of developing serious post-Covid conditions, or permanent damage to your organs and brain.
The Risk At Events
This weekend, there are many large public events in Buckinghamshire, such as WhizzFizzFest on Saturday 2nd, and Aylesbury on Sea on Sunday 3rd. It is likely that there will be hundreds of Covid-infected people at these events. Your risk of catching Covid inside is critically high, and your risk of catching Covid outdoors is still very high. BuDS strongly recommends that you wear an FFP2 face mask to protect yourself if you go to any events, and try to avoid going indoors or mixing with large crowds.
Precautions To Take
As this third wave continues to mount, everyone in Bucks should be taking sensible precautions to avoid catching Covid-19. Covid-19 is more dangerous the more times you catch it, and the new variants making up this wave can avoid any protection you may have from having caught Covid-19 before. Sensible things to be doing include: working from home if you can, wearing an FFP2 mask at work or when in shops and supermarkets, switching from indoor to outdoor venues e.g. going for a picnic rather than eating in a restaurant. Most importantly, people who are not taking Covid precautions need to stay away from older, disabled, and clinically vulnerable people. It is one thing to take risks with your own health, but it is unacceptable to take risks with other people’s health.
