Covid-19 Risk Assessment: Week Ending 6 June 2022

This week, we are not able to give you any update about the Covid-19 pandemic in Bucks. The Office for National Statistics (ONS), who provide the data we use, have decided not to publish any regional data for the last week, and instead to publish a fortnightly update on Friday 10 June.

Nationally, the number of people infected with Covid-19 is continuing to slowly decline. Bucks is usually slightly worse than the national average, so we are predicting either a standstill or a slight decline in infection rates in Bucks. However, even with a small decline, the risk of catching Covid when out and about in Bucks is still VERY HIGH.

BuDS still urges everyone to be Covid-Cautious and keep taking sensible precautions against catching Covid-19. To repeat: the chances of coming across a person with Covid in your everyday life is still VERY HIGH. Wear a FFP2 or N95 filter mask in public places, breathe clean air, avoid crowds and busy places, work from home if you can, and protect your older and vulnerable relatives and friends.

BuDS will let continue to keep you up to date every week.

Jubilee Covid-19 Warning

The Platinum Jubilee weekend is a time for celebrations and parties for many. But Covid-19 infection levels are still very high across the UK, and in Buckinghamshire. One in 57 people in Bucks are infected with Covid-19, so the risk of an infected person being near you at a Jubilee event is very high. While enjoying yourself this weekend, please remember to be Covid-Cautious, and keep taking sensible precautions against Covid-19. Wear an FFP2 or N95 filter mask indoors and in crowded places if you can.

Why Flexible Working Is Crucial For Disabled Employees

Written by Janneke Elford, BuDS HR & Projects Manager

Due to the pandemic, a new era of remote working has provided greater chances for disabled workers, many of whom had previously been wrongly excluded from the workforce due to a lack of flexibility from employers.

One group in particular has been diligently advocating for flexible work: disabled and chronically ill people, who are frequently forced out of many jobs due to their employer’s inflexibility. Covid-19, on the other hand, has compelled many employers to try remote working, and they’ve discovered that it works.

Back in the Saddle – 2014 Anniversary

I was just looking through some old photos when I realised that it is 8 years since Cary and I completed the first Back in the Saddle sponsored bike ride challenge in aid of BuDS.

We took on the challenge to fill in a part of the Coast2Coast (C2C) cycle route from Whitehaven to Tynemouth which we had missed out the year before due to Cary having a cycling accident.  It was always going to be a challenge to go back to the accident site, get on our bikes and cycle the section we missed, but it was also one of the wettest, coldest May days that either of us can remember.  That made the challenge all the harder.

However, we achieved our goal, completed the challenge, and raised funds for BuDS at the same time.

Life has changed quite a bit for both of us since we did that ride.  Disabilities mean that I don’t think either of us could manage it now.  However, that determination to achieve goals is still strong within both of us.

Back in the Saddle – Update 27

Well, who would believe it, I’ve made it to another checkpoint on my exercise bike virtual challenge! I’ve now reached Dunrobin Castle and with only 116km left to go, the end is in definitely in sight. You never know, but I might actually reach John o’Groats by the 17 month anniversary of when I first started this ridiculously mad-cap challenge 🙂

Covid-19 Risk Assessment Week Ending 30 May 2022

There is continuing cautious good news about the Covid-19 pandemic in Bucks. The number of infected people is continuing to fall, but only very slowly. However, with 1 in 57 people in Bucks infected with Covid-19, the risk of catching Covid when out and about in Bucks is still VERY HIGH.

Because the number of infected people in Bucks has reduced, BuDS has lowered the Covid-19 risk level to very high. Remember that a very high risk is exactly what it sounds like – you have a very high risk of catching Covid-19 in your everyday life if you don’t take precautions.

BuDS will let continue to keep you up to date every week.

Covid-19 Risk Assessment Week Ending 23 May 2022

With 1 in 48 people in Bucks infected with Covid-19, the risk of catching Covid when out and about in Bucks is still EXTREMELY HIGH. Recent falls in the number of infected people have stopped, and early signs are that we may see them rising again soon.

BuDS still urges everyone to be Covid-Cautious and keep taking sensible precautions against catching Covid-19. To repeat: the chances of coming across a person with Covid in your everyday life is still EXTREMELY HIGH. Wear a FFP2 or N95 filter mask in public places, breathe clean air, avoid crowds and busy places, work from home if you can, and protect your older and vulnerable relatives and friends.

The good news is that the number of people in hospital with Covid-19 is continuing to trend downwards. This is because the number of people infected with Omicron BA.2 is falling. However, if the number of infected people starts to rise again as new variants spread (see below), the number of people in hospital will start to go back up again as well.

BuDS will let continue to keep you up to date every week.
