Cary is a 13 year-old girl living in Buckinghamshire. In 2013, her family set themselves the challenge to cycle the 140 mile Coast2Coast cycle route across England (Whitehaven to Tynemouth) in 5 days. It was a fantastic holiday & great cycling – but on the penultimate day, disaster struck when Cary came off her bike as she cycled down a very steep hill. It was a horrific accident and poor Cary ended up in hospital with concussion, amnesia & injuries all down her left side. Thankfully her helmet took the brunt of the fall & she didn’t suffer permanent damage.
On 28th May 2014, Cary (and her mum) went back to the scene of the accident to complete their cycling challenge. This was her toughest bike ride ever mentally – going down hills was a huge challenge and she was filled with fear. To make matters worse, it was pouring with some of the heaviest rain seen for months most of the time!
But Cary persevered, and finished the course – pedalling every inch herself. BuDS salutes her courage and determination – well done!
To give herself another challenge (as if the cycling wasn’t enough), Cary also wanted to raise at least £100 for BuDS. In the event, she raised £400 – a magnificent achievement.
